Kmart Is Confused, Prepares for Black Sunday

It seems that every year, the holiday season arrives earlier and earlier. But Kmart seems to be taking things to extremes. According to Kmart, the holiday season begins right after Halloween. That's right. Kmart is having Black Friday deals starting November 2. The Kmart Black Friday sales (or Black Sunday if you want to get technical) will focus primarily on consumer electronics items.

Typically Black Friday is the day when you can buy large TVs, home theater systems, camcorders, and digital cameras for much cheaper than usual. Some of these items retailers will sell at or below cost just to get people in the door.

The rule of thumb is that the early bird gets the worm. Stores with deals will open as early as 4 AM. In fact some stores have even started their sales at midnight the night before, but no one dared go before Thanksgiving, until now. Not only did Kmart cross the line, they pretty much erased it.

Kmart says this move is based on consumer feedback. With the economy the way it is, people have been holiday shopping since June, so it makes sense to move up Black Friday as well, although I am sure that Kmart will still have door buster sales with everyone else on the real Black Friday. Kmart's pre-emptive Black Sunday won't be as black as Black Friday. You won't have to wake up early to get the deals, since they will run all week.

So what's next? Christmas in July? Oh wait, there are stores that already do that. Having more Black Fridays is actually a good thing for us as consumers. It at least gives us more opportunities to buy a 50 inch flat panel for $800, or laptops for $150. So bring on the good deals I say.
