Google Wave Available to Limited Users Come Fall

Google Wave swept in on a tide of excitement and hype in late May/early June. Google wanted to redefine email and bring it into the modern age. Well, the Wave has been in a few hands now, it’s been opened to about 6,000 developers on Monday and now Google has announced that they’ll have a semi public beta beginning September 30 for about 100,000 people.

In all honesty, Google Wave sounds confusing to me. I have a hard enough time paying attention when I’m trying to write a blog, respond to a couple IM windows and fire off some emails and texts to stay on top of things. So combining it all into one window makes me nervous that I’d get overwhelmed. But at the same time, having it all in one window could be just the thing I need to save my sanity. Real time communication without the back-and-forth of email, loss of crucial information because I didn’t see an IM and so forth. It sounds like exactly what the real world needs – especially in the office. The more I learn about it, the more I see where I could apply it.

Google Wave is one of Google’s most experimental creations yet, and it really is exciting. Finally something really new and innovative that we can literally see changing the face of the web as we know it … if it catches on.

If nothing else, you’ll probably have to fight for the available spaces as users vie for a position to be part of email being brought to the 21st century, or a great big flop. Either way, if you’re interested in trying out the Wave in September, you can sign up at wave.google.com to be part of the beta testing.
