Nintendo DSi Jumping on App Store Bandwagon?
With more than 100 million unit sales the Nintendo DS and DS Lite are currently the best selling handheld video game consoles on the market. However, in the past Nintendo hasn't exactly been renowned for its innovation in the "additional online content world" (I'm looking at you WiiWare) but it seems that isn't stopping them from venturing into the virtual world of apps.Should Apple start shaking in their App Tree?
This Nintendo App Store rumor is coming down the pipe just days before Nintendo officially launches the DSi, their newest incarnation of the popular DS handheld, in the U.S. and Europe.
The Nintendo DSi has been available in Japan since November and already has access to the DSi Shop, which is very similar to the Wii Shop Channel, and already has a small list of games and applications.
DSiWare apps are minimal and unassuming and they seem designed more for productivity (if you can call it that) than mindless entertainment. Stuff like a clock and a calculator are really the only things available. Sorry, iFart, there is no place for you yet. (But mini Brain Games don't seem too far fetched.)
It seems that Nintendo wants to be part of your everyday life and although they claim they are not trying to compete with Apple it sure seems like they are moving in on their territory.
Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, will be giving a keynote at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week. I guess all our questions will be answered then.
... Or will they?
