The Internet Goes Green for Earth Day

Green is in the air, everywhere I look around, every "site" and every sound ... From jewelry distributors offering free gems with all rings purchased for Earth Day (because that's the first thing I think about when I think Earth Day: what kind of gems can I get to celebrate?) to Bob Barker touting recycled cell phones to new recycling programs announced. Here's a quick roundup of some of the green things we've found today:

Sony launched its GreenFill recycling program. Essentially, they've put recycling containers in stores across the country as a reminder and a simple way to recycle small electronics (from any manufacturer) like cellphones, digital cameras, camcorders, portable games devices, MP3 players and more. We like that Sony is making it easy to recycle electronics and has a program that will go far beyond Earth Day.

DARPA hit a major milestone in their research on programmable matter, which just might be able to give us the replicators you see in Star Trek. The team has been able to come up with a mathematical model that demonstrates the theoretical viability of creating a device similar to the one found on the old TV show, basically allowing us to turn matter into whatever we want. It's a little bit of a stretch to make this green (we just like geeking out over the technology possibilities) but if successful the program could reduce the military's carbon footprint. Essentially, they create one single material that could be used in a variety of ways and forms from combat gear to medical gear to whatever else they may need. It could almost eliminate the military's waste.

Along with that you've got a special edition of The Price is Right featuring cell phones made from recycled material. Fox TV using the whole month to launch their "Green it. Mean it" campaign. NASA with its special Earth Day images and we're certain there are more out there, but we really just wanted a chance to talk about how cool the DARPA stuff is. Can't wait to see it put into practice.
