The gaming industry has hit a huge (and impressive) milestone in its history. And for gaming fanatics like me this has been a long time coming. A new report revealed that in 2008, video games outsold DVD and Blu-ray sales ... combined!

This should come as no surprise if you've been watching reports about the gaming industry for the last few years. Hardcore gamers have been pouring more and more money into the gaming industry, but it was the advent of the Wii that really pushed sales to current levels. The addition of sales from casual gamers to the already expanding sales from regular gamers put gaming over the top.

And frankly I'm ecstatic. Gaming has so many possibilities still ahead as a source of entertainment, so much room to expand and grow, despite some of the things holding it back. DVD and Blu-ray have nowhere to go after all the hubbub about high definition has become commonplace. What's next: more sophisticated GAMES in the special features section?

Keep in mind that this was a sales record, not a units-sold record. That means that videogame sales reached $32 billion, and DVD/Blu-ray sales totaled $29 billion. Since DVDs and Blu-ray discs are still cheaper than the average game, there were likely more movies sold than games. But what this does tell us is that people are willing to spend more on games than on movies.

Obviously, there's a lot going on here because this isn't counting all the movies rented through the new movie streaming services and so forth. But I'm optimistic about the future of gaming ... as long as we can get some less crappy titles for the Wii.

We've got more gaming news and game reviews for you, along with some more blog posts that are so entertaining you'll almost think it's a game. Almost.
